This project will design and construct a roundabout at this intersection as a mitigation requirement for development of the Shoreline Community College. 

Project Overview 

This project will improve the intersection of Greenwood Avenue N with N 160th Street and NW Innis Arden Way by replacing the current stop signs with a roundabout. 

We are currently in Phase 2 of this project: Design and construction. We are reviewing 60% design plans and specifications.

Tree Impacts

This project will impact up to 14 trees. The arborist report for this project identifies 11 trees for removal and three additional trees that may need to be removed. We are working with arborists and designers to minimize tree impacts. Due to property acquisition negotiations and uncertainty with the layout of the improvements, it was determined that completing the arborist review at 60% would result in a more thorough understanding of tree impacts and mitigation. The arborist report will be included on the project website in the next few weeks with tree impacts identified.

Overview and History 

Shoreline Community College built student housing on campus, completed in 2019. The College did a traffic study for the new housing. It showed that the City’s delay standards weren’t being met at the intersection of Greenwood Avenue N with N 160th Street and NW Innis Arden Way. The College was granted six years to improve the intersection from when the student housing building is complete and obtains a Certificate of Occupancy. 

City Council approved a City capital project to develop a design concept for improving the intersection. This project focused on:

  • Talking to the community
  • Completing traffic analysis
  • Selecting a concept that improves safety and mobility for all people

This work also evaluated whether replacing the existing stop signs with new traffic signals or installing roundabouts for the intersection would best meet those goals. After completing that work, the City selected the roundabout alternative and design and construct the project as a City Capital Project.  

The City will finish the design and build the roundabout project by fall 2025. We know this is an important intersection for the neighborhood and requested community input in the design. The first task upon the commencement of roundabout design was to create two preliminary design concepts from which to choose.  The Alternatives Analysis Report describes the details of the design concepts. The City has agreed with the design consultant Reid Middleton that the preferred alternative should move forward toward full design.
