A basic disaster supply kit should allow your family to be self-sufficient at home for at least three days after an emergency. Food and water should be your highest priority when you begin putting a kit together. You probably already have many of the other recommended items. Make a list of those you don't have and add one or two of them to your weekly shopping list until you have them all.

In case you must evacuate your home quickly, prepare a "go bag" for each member of your family. Go bags should be easy to carry containers such as backpacks. You may not be at home in an emergency situation, so consider keeping some additional supplies in your car and at work.

• Food and water (as much as you can practically carry)
• Portable radio and extra batteries
• First aid kit and handbook
• 5 day supply of any medications you take regularly and a copy of your prescriptions
• Whistle
• Personal hygiene supplies (including toilet paper)
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Change of clothes
• Sturdy shoes
• Warm hat and gloves
• Local map
• Cash in small denominations
• Large garbage bags
• Dust mask
• Pen, paper and tape
• Copy of health insurance card, driver license or identification card
• Photos of family members for reunification purposes
• List of emergency contact phone numbers
• For children, in addition to above:
  • Medical consent forms
  • Family photos
  • Favorite toy or book

To prevent damage to your home during an earthquake:

• Make sure your house is bolted to the foundation and brace cripple walls.

• Anchor heavy furnishings such as tall bookcases, dressers, and filing cabinets.

• Secure your water heater and any other appliance that could move and disrupt your utility lines.

• Check the stability of your chimney, roof and wall foundations.

• Have flexible fittings placed on your gas and water pipes.

• Store breakable and heavy objects on lower shelves.

• Use non-slip mats to prevent objects such as vases, statues, etc. from sliding. Use putty or poster tack under lighter breakable display items to keep them adhered to shelves.

• Heavy pictures and mirrors should not be hung over beds or couches. Use art hooks designed for earthquake zones or push shut the hook of conventional picture hangers.

• Install latches on cabinet doors.

• Keep all flammable and hazardous liquids such as cleaning products, pest sprays and paint on lower shelves of secured cabinets.

Prevent drainage problems:

• Sweep your driveway instead of using a hose. This saves water and keeps dirt out of your drainage system.
• Avoid the use of wood chip mulch around drain inlets or swales. The wood chips float and can be easily moved by runoff water.
• Use caution when planting trees or shrubs. The roots may grow into underground drainage pipes disrupting your drainage system.
• Install a removable connection between your downspouts and roof drains.
• Disconnecting downspouts during cleaning will help keep debris out of your drainage system.
• Add screens on gutters to help keep debris out of your drainage system.
• Help to keep catch basin inlets clear by keeping leaves off of the grates.

Prepare your home:

• Consider installing a water alarm to let you know when water is accumulating in your basement or crawlspace.
• Check the basement walls for any cracks and seal them to prevent water from coming in.
• Consider purchasing on or more submersible pumps in advance to remove water in and around your home during heavy rains or flooding.
• Buy sand and sandbags ahead of time and learn to use them.
• Store valuables on the second story of your home or in your attic, or higher up on the ground floor.  
• Create a "flood file" and store it in a secure place in a waterproof container, including:
  • A copy of your insurance policies
  • A household inventory: Written list and photographs or video of all major household items and valuables.
  • Copies of all other critical documents.

Protect your investment: Flood Insurance

A standard homeowner insurance policy will not cover flood damage: however all residents of Shoreline are eligible for flood insurance. Contact your insurance agent or learn more about flood insurance at www.floodsmart.gov. 

To protect your neighbors' and your property, prepare your yard for the possibility of high winds. Major damage to your home and automobile can be caused by high winds turning loose objects into projectiles.

Check your trees and shrubs:

• Healthy trees can help protect your home from high winds, unhealthy trees can topple and cause serious damage to your home.
• Pruning and thinning trees can prevent tree breakage by reducing the tree's wind resistance.
• Trim any branches that overhang the house and could possibly fall onto the roof.
• Remove any dead or diseased limbs.
• Consult an arborist if you are unsure of the health of a tree.

Check gutters and downspouts:

•  Make sure that gutters and downspouts are firmly secured
• Check downspouts to make sure there are no clogs

Check outbuildings and other garden structures:

• Inspect roofing materials on garden sheds and pergolas and make sure shingles are secure.
• Look for rotten posts, wobbly or rotten joints, and loose decorative elements.
• Ensure all trellises and garden stakes are firmly posted in the ground.
• Inspect fencing, checking all attachments and making sure all posts are securely set.

Secure loose items when high winds are in the forecast:

• Bring in hanging plants.
• Store all gardening equipment, including rolling up hoses.
• Secure lawn furniture, empty containers, flowerpots, wind chimes, flags, birdbaths, dog houses, satellite dishes, etc.
• If possible, bring waste collection carts into the garage.
