This project is being constructed by the same contractor who is working on 15th Ave NE (NE 155th Street to NE 175th Street), and tied under the same contract. As of October 29, 2024, the utility company has completed removal of a vault which was in the way of the final segment of sidewalk on the northeast corner of 5th Ave NE and NE 170th Street. The City can now complete the  remaining portion of sidewalk and begin closing out items on the punch list.  The contractor will complete the last segment of sidewalk this month. Construction began on August 7, 2023. The project is anticipated to be complete in Fall 2024.

Project Overview

The City will rehabilitate damaged pedestrian facilities on 5th Avenue NE between NE 165th Street and NE 175th Street. The project will repair sidewalk panels damaged by tree roots, cracking, and settlement, and curb ramps will be upgraded to current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards.

This project is part of the Sidewalk Rehabilitation Program, which provides repair and replacement of existing pedestrian facilities located in the public right-of-way. Sidewalk rehabilitation projects are prioritized based on the City’s ADA Transition Plan, which developed priorities for sidewalk repair and replacement based on a combination of the severity of sidewalk damage and the need for accessibility in that location. The program is funded through annual vehicle license fees.

Tree Impacts

The August 2023 Arborist Report provides analysis of trees impacted by the project and the arborist’s recommendations were incorporated into design. The Arborist Report identified 66 trees located in the right-of-way and 27 trees located on adjacent properties. The City will retain all trees on private property and 59 trees in the right-of-way. Root shaving and streel plates were used to protect 59 trees.
