Project Overview

The City of Shoreline is nearly complete with construction of new sidewalks along 20th Avenue NW from NW 190th Street to NW 195th Street. The sidewalk is built on one side of the street and will connect existing pedestrian facilities to the entrance of Richmond Beach Saltwater Park. Construction is near completion and the contractor has a few remaining tasks that are weather dependent and are expected to be completed in Spring 2024.

This project is part of the 2018 Voter-Approved Sidewalk Program to build and repair sidewalks throughout Shoreline.

Proposed Improvements

Final sidewalk design on 20th Avenue NW is based on input received from the community, the following items will be included in the final design.

  • 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the west side of 20th Avenue NW.
  • Runoff collection system on both sides of 20th Avenue NW and infiltration facilities to allow rain to soak into ground and reduce ponding issues.
  • One raised crosswalk at the intersection of NW 193rd Street to slow traffic. You can learn more about raised sidewalks/speed tables from the National Association of City Transportation website. The City only has funding for one raised crosswalk.

The City has also completed a Draft Arborist Assessment of the impacts that sidewalk and drainage improvements will have to trees. The final arborist report was issued in August 2023.

No trees were removed as a result of the sidewalk project.

Public Outreach

  • June 2023: A "Construction Coming Soon" Postcard (PDF) was mailed to 472 residents near the project location.
  • June 2022: The public was asked to provide input on 60% design through an online engagement survey that was available from May 7 - June 27, 2022.
  • May 2022: After completing 60 percent design for this sidewalk project, the City identified items to be reviewed before the design was finalized as described in the 60 percent Design Memo.
  • January 2022: The public was invited to an online meeting with a question and answer session on January 12, 2022. An online engagement survey was available until January 14, 2022 to solicit feedback on the project. You can read the PowerPoint Presentation.
  • December 2021: The City mailed a Public Meeting Notification Postcard to residents near 20th Avenue NW sidewalk project site. The postcard invited residents to the January 12, 2022 online presentation.
  • October 2021: The City mailed a Construction and Optional Survey Notification Postcard to residents near the 20th Avenue NW sidewalk project site.

Schedule

  • Winter 2021: Preliminary Design is scheduled to be complete
  • Spring 2023: Final Design is scheduled to be complete
  • Summer 2023: Construction is expected to begin
  • Fall 2023: Construction is scheduled to be complete
  • Spring 2024: Grass seeding and project closeout expected to be complete
