Overview and History

The City installed various pedestrian safety improvements around Echo Lake Elementary School and Shorewood High School. The purpose of this project was to increase driver awareness of both speed and areas of concentrated pedestrian activity. This project was funded through a grant from the Washington Traffic Safety Commission.

School crossing signs, speed signs, and other traffic calming devices remind drivers to treat the area with special care and attention. Properly designed and applied traffic calming devices encourage good motorist and pedestrian behavior in the school zone. School Zone signs alert and educated drivers within the school zone. The following signs were installed in this project:

• Speed Limit signs announce school zone speed limits.
• School Zone advance warning and End School Zone signs alert drivers that they are entering or leaving the reduced speed limit area.
• School Crossing signs notify drivers of crosswalks.
• Flashers are installed to call attention to a critical traffic point.
• Radar Speed Signs (driver feedback signs) alert drivers to the actual speed, remind them of the speed limit and are scientifically proven to reduce speeding.
