Status

As of November 2024
Phase: 90% Design / Permitting

This project will replace the existing pump station, rehabilitate the existing detention pond, and install other minor improvements to the Pump Station 30 (PS 30) facility. The new pump station will include a new wet well with two new submersible pumps, new control panels, communications systems, and other minor electrical and control improvements. Improvements to the existing detention pond include new inlet and outlet pipe, removing accumulated solids, improving access ramps, and adding a pre-treatment structure.

The pump station is located at the southwest corner of NE 170th Street and 15th Ave NE. Click the link below for the vicinity map.

Overview and History

Pump Station 30 is one of eight surface water pump stations currently operating in the City and has been in operation since 1992. It detains runoff from 43 acres of commercial and residential land to prevent flooding and move water to downstream piping that eventually flows to Thornton Creek. Many parts of the pump station are past their intended operational life and need replacement. It has been identified in multiple studies as a candidate for replacement.

A Stormwater Pump Station Condition and Capacity Assessment was completed in 2016. This report evaluated the City’s eight existing stormwater pump stations, identified various deficiencies, and recommended general improvements for each station. It found Pump Station 30 needed new pumps, valve vaults, valves, and controls, improvements to the existing wetwell, improved electrical and communications systems, and minor site improvements.

In early 2019, the City put out a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to hire a design consultant to design consistent pump station improvements across all eight of the City’s existing surface water pump stations. After review of multiple firm proposals, BHC Consultants, LLC was selected. In mid-2019, BHC began the first phase of their scope, which was to assemble a Stormwater Pump Station and SCADA Improvements Preliminary Design Report. This report verified and expanded on the findings of the 2016 Conditions Assessment, provided telemetry design recommendations for all stations, and provided preliminary design for the two pump stations requiring full replacement, including PS-30. The recommended improvements for PS 30 include replacing the existing wet well and pumps, installing new control panels, adding a pre-treatment structure, and rehabilitating the existing detention pond by removing solids, improving the maintenance ramps, and replacing inlet and outlet piping. A new force main in the public right-of-way is also recommended. Frontage improvements along NE 170th Street are also recommended if funding allows.

Tree Impacts

This project requires the removal of 1 tree. We will replant 2-3 replacement trees. View the Arborist Report.

Funding

King County Flood Control District (KCFCD) has contributed with a Flood Reduction Grant as well as the KCFCD Sub-Regional Opportunity Fund.
