This project is being worked by the same contractor who is working on 5th Ave NE (NE 165th Street to NE 175th Street) and tied under the same contract. This portion is nearly complete with the exception of a few punch list items.  It will be fully complete and closed out once the contractor and City go through items on the punch list for this project and the sidewalk project on 5th Ave NE. Construction began on August 7, 2023. The project is anticipated to be complete in Fall 2024.

Project Overview

The City will repair and replace pedestrian facilities on 15th Avenue NE between NE 155th Street and NE 175th Street. The project will repair sidewalk panels damaged by tree roots, cracking, and settlement, and curb ramps will be upgraded to current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Other improvements include removing barriers, such as grinding lifted sidewalk panels and upgrading non-ADA compliant stormwater grates.

This project is part of the Sidewalk Rehabilitation Program, which provides repair and replacement of existing pedestrian facilities located in the public right-of-way. Sidewalk rehabilitation projects are prioritized based on the City’s ADA Transition Plan, which developed priorities for sidewalk repair and replacement based on a combination of the severity of sidewalk damage and the need for accessibility in that location. The program is funded through annual vehicle license fees.

Tree Impacts

The December 2021 Arborist Report provides analysis of trees impacted by the project and the arborist’s recommendations were incorporated into design. This project removed 18 trees and 7 trees were saved using root shaving and streel plates. Due to the narrow amenity strip (approximately 3 feet wide), replacement trees are not feasible. The City’s standard for tree planting in amenity zones requires a width of 5 feet. Tree standards are defined by the Parks/Tree Board Street Tree List.
